Spectrum of chronic lung allograft pathology in a mouse minor-mismatched orthotopic lung transplant model
Evidence level: animal (mouse) study; abstract-only
A mouse lung transplant study describing a spectrum of CLAD-like pathology, including pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis resembling human RAS.

Summary
The authors used a mouse orthotopic left lung transplant model with a minor-antigen mismatch (B10 donors into B6 recipients) and two control combinations, and scored pathology blindly four weeks after transplant. According to the abstract, obliterative bronchiolitis was present in 66 percent of B10 to B6 grafts and 30 percent of B6 to B10 grafts, and most mice with obliterative bronchiolitis also had parenchymal fibrosis with a pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis pattern, reminiscent of human RAS-related pathology. The authors conclude that grading of airway fibrosis, parenchymal fibrosis, acute rejection, vascular fibrosis and epithelial changes can make the model more useful for mechanistic studies. This is an animal study, and its findings may not apply to humans.
