Work summary
Erik A.M. Verschuuren's listed work includes multicentre studies of infection and treatment in chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD, the lasting loss of lung function after a lung transplant). An international cohort found that airway colonisation with the fungus Aspergillus was not associated with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) [DOI 10.1016/j.healun.2019.06.007]. A 2025 study of invasive aspergillosis after transplant examined prophylaxis and risk factors and the effect on CLAD; it reported no significant difference in death rates between patients with and without the infection (34 versus 29 percent) [DOI 10.1111/tid.70020]. A European multicentre randomised trial of pirfenidone, an anti-scarring drug, in BOS did not show superiority over placebo and standard care, and the authors state it cannot be recommended for treating BOS [DOI 10.1183/13993003.02154-2024].
